A successful and impactful stakeholder dialogue was held in Baidoa on 9 November 2014, focusing on the rights of children and minority groups. The event was organized by GREDO in collaboration with Save the Children, with generous funding from DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency).
The objective of the discussion was to raise awareness, share insights, and identify solutions to the challenges faced by vulnerable groups—particularly children and minorities in accessing essential services and enjoying their fundamental rights. The forum brought together community leaders, civil society representatives, government officials, educators, healthcare workers, and youth advocates.
Key issues addressed included:
- Widespread discrimination and marginalization of minority groups
- Limited access to quality education and healthcare for vulnerable children
- Gaps in child protection frameworks and service delivery
- The need for inclusive policies that reflect the diversity of Somali society
The discussion resulted in several meaningful outcomes, including:
- A renewed commitment by local authorities and stakeholders to strengthen child protection policies and enforcement mechanisms
- Agreement to advocate for equal access to education and healthcare services for minority groups
- The development of community-level action plans aimed at reducing discrimination and fostering social inclusion
- Recommendations for capacity-building programs targeting local leaders and service providers to ensure inclusive and rights-based approaches
This initiative marks an important step toward creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. By promoting dialogue, building partnerships, and advancing local solutions, GREDO and its partners are helping to lay the foundation for a future where every child and every community regardless of background can thrive in safety and dignity.
