5/December /2024, Mogadishu Environmental Conference Summit, held under the theme “Environmental Justice of Somalia and Building a Sustainable Future,” brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials, environmental experts, civil society organizations, academic institutions, youth representatives, and international partners.
The summit served as a vital platform to engage in high-level discussions on the pressing environmental challenges facing Somalia today ranging from deforestation, land degradation, and water scarcity to the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.
Participants explored inclusive and sustainable solutions that align with principles of environmental justice, ensuring that efforts to protect and restore the environment also address social inequalities and empower marginalized groups.
Key focus areas included:
- Climate resilience and adaptation strategies
- Community-based natural resource management
- Urban greening and sustainable infrastructure
- Youth involvement in climate action
- Policy reforms for environmental governance
The conference emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action across all sectors and levels of society to achieve a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for Somalia.
