The first phase of the tree-planting initiative in the newly established Barwaaqo neighborhood of Baidoa has been successfully completed, marking a significant milestone in community-led environmental restoration efforts.
Located on the eastern outskirts of Baidoa, Barwaaqo is a rapidly expanding residential area, now home to over 500 families. Formerly barren and lacking any vegetation, the neighborhood has long endured extreme heat conditions without the benefit of natural shade posing health and comfort challenges, particularly during the dry season when temperatures become unbearably high.
In response to repeated appeals from the local community, the Dedo Organization launched a green initiative, planting nearly 100 trees today as part of its broader commitment to climate adaptation and urban greening. These trees are expected to:
- Provide essential shade for residents
- Help reduce surface temperatures
- Improve local air quality
- Contribute to the overall beautification and livability of the neighborhood
What sets this effort apart is the active involvement and ownership demonstrated by the community members, who have pledged to protect and nurture the newly planted trees. Their commitment underscores a growing awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability and the role grassroots participation plays in achieving it.
This initiative represents the beginning of a long-term vision to transform Barwaaqo into a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient community, while setting a powerful example of collaboration between civil society and local residents in addressing environmental challenges.
